Strong Public Schools
Strong Public Schools
My dad was a school teacher and he instilled in me the belief that unlocking opportunities starts with a solid public school education. From early childhood education through post-secondary, opportunities shouldn’t be decided by zip code or tax bracket. We have a duty to unlock the full potential of each and every child through safe schools that are nurturing learning communities with certified teachers, nurses, counselors, and the support staff that keeps a school running.
While the majority of public education policy is done at the state level, the federal government plays a key role in funding certain aspects of schools, protecting the civil rights of every student, and ensuring kids with different abilities are given the accommodations and support they deserve.

As Texas Republicans have opted to underfund public schools and then pass a voucher program to defund our neighborhood schools, I will fight back from the federal level to boost funding into our most vulnerable schools.
Increase funding for school lunch programs, including over the summer as many kids rely on school for meals.
Ensure adequate resources go to all Texas public schools to serve students in ESL and those with IEPs.
Restore funding to the educator professional development and student achievement programs. Texas lost $660 million last year due to funding cuts under Trump.
Stop the Department of Education from dismantling the Civil Rights Division that protects students from discrimination and ensures children with different abilities receive the accommodations they are entitled to under the IDEA.
Enacting universal pre-k.
A national prohibition on banning books.
Surge funds into schools to hire teachers and give existing teaching staff a long overdue raise.
Providing support dollars for after-school programs.
Address the growing literacy and numeracy concerns.

In the House, I’ve worked to support our students and co-sponsored legislative solutions:
The Universal School Meals Program Act would provide free breakfasts and lunches for students at all public schools—no matter their ZIP code.
The School Meals during School Closures Act ensures kids who rely on school lunches don’t go hungry during school closures caused by weather, public health emergencies, labor disputes, unsafe facilities, construction, or other unanticipated events.
The Head Start Shutdown Protection Act of 2025 reimburses states and local providers to keep Head Start programs running during government shut downs so that children and working families are not disrupted because Washington fails to work
The Safe Schools Improvement Act to protect students from bullying and harassment in schools
