<h4>Labor unions and their organizing efforts have secured many of the workplace protections, safety standards, fair pay, and benefits so many of us rely on today. I am honored to have enjoyed the support of various labor groups, including <a href="https://us5.campaign-archive.com/?u=6f0c65483e13e41388386da2c&amp;id=79700af741">SEIU Texas that has endorsed our campaign for the US Senate</a>, because they know I will fight tooth-and-nail for worker’s rights. I am proud to have a lifetime 100% pro-labor voting record on both the state and the federal level. I’ve marched, rallied, organized, and walked the picket line with union members across my career. And when I fight for something, I put my all into it, securing strong bipartisan support for several such bills, including working across the aisle to get our incumbent Senator on board. Unfortunately, this legislation included in the Farm Bill is being blocked by the Trump Administration which has let the Farm Bill limp along into its third year behind schedule.I’ve already started tackling these issues through legislation and in the Senate, I’ll work to get them across the finish line:

Disability Rights, Access, and Opportunity

<h4>As a civil rights attorney, I am appalled by the myriad ways our government continues to not provide equal access and opportunity to Americans with disabilities. Despite over 70 million Americans living with some kind of disability, far too often their suffering is sidelined by our society, ignored and unaddressed. You have my commitment, and my record clearly shows that I have always and will continue to focus on breaking down the barriers that prevent Americans with disabilities from living a life with dignity and opportunity. We need a new, reinvigorated government approach for providing equal access to all, starting with our schools, where vital services and accommodations remain too hard to receive, and extending to the workplace, where invidious discrimination still exists and must be addressed. Here in Texas, especially, we must also confront the fact that many Americans living with severe disabilities have their claims rejected by our under-staffed, under-resourced, state agencies. But even if those with significant in-home needs are recognized by the state, our government and economic policies have made it impossible for healthcare workers and paraprofessionals to make a living providing critical services. And for those with the ability and desire to live independently, our municipal transportation services and local infrastructure fall short of providing equal access all too often. Community Safety

<h4>As a civil rights attorney who has worked on these issues first hand, I know there is no shortage of solutions. We deserve leaders with the courage to take action. Throughout my career I have fought to reform policing with an emphasis on accountability, trust, and training. At the same time, I have prioritized keeping our community safe from violent crime through data driven measures, not through fear. My approach protects our civil rights, addresses the root causes of crime, and supports a community policing model for public safety. In addition, we must be honest about the number one threat to our public safety right now, which is gun violence. Whether it’s sending our kids to school, enjoying a movie, or going to the mall -- Americans live in fear of gun violence. I will never forget May 24th, 2022 when 19 elementary kids and two teachers were killed at Robb Elementary School, just as I have not forgotten the shootings at the Allen Outlet Mall, Tyler Courthouse, Sulphur Springs, Ft. Hood, and El Paso. The worst part is that this list could go on and on. We don’t lack ideas as much as we do courage. Both Democrats and Republicans need to break away from politics as usual especially when lives are literally on the line. I know the commonsense gun safety measures I support have widespread support in Texas and across the nation as people are fed up with living in fear. When I served one term in the Texas House, my signature bill was Breonna’s Bill to ban no-knock warrants in Texas, with few exceptions. I’ve reintroduced this bill on the federal level as the Justice For Breonna Taylor Act. Two of my strongest allies and partners who helped build the bipartisan coalition included law enforcement groups and gun rights organizations. Both of these groups were on receiving ends of fire during no-knock raids and knew how ineffective, chaotic, and dangerous these raids were for all involved, including the police. Healthcare You Need, When You Need It

<h4>Healthcare is a key concern for Texans across backgrounds and generations. Healthcare should be a guarantee, not a luxury. No family should have to choose between paying the light bill and paying for lifesaving medicine. By every metric, the United States spends more on healthcare than any other nation. We pay 70% more because of Big Insurance companies with rising premiums and declining coverage, Big Pharma that overcharges Americans when comparing the cost of the same exact drug overseas, shady billing practices, and predatory facility fees to name a few reasons. I will fight to bring down the cost of prescriptions and relieve your medical debt.&nbsp; </h4><h4>I’m pushing for a health care system that centers patients, not profits. <h4>One in five Texas adults lives with a mental health condition. Youth mental health crises are steady on the rise. An overwhelming majority of Texas counties are considered mental health provider deserts and lack access to any mental health providers. A topic that I’m passionate in addressing, that I also feel does not receive enough attention, is the alarming rates of suicide among farmers and ranchers. Entrepreneurship has its challenges, and farmers have a particularly stressful occupation. Farmers tend to have increased levels of depression, anxiety, and a suicide rate that is more than double the national average. There are a million stressors on our farmers and ranchers, most of them made worse when our economy is not as strong. <h4>In the modern day, our students need preparation to compete in the global job market. The reality for too many families is that the cost of higher education is simply too high, there’s not enough assistance, and some will never climb out of student loan debt. That’s yet another policy failure. Texas has the best talent in the world, whether you choose to go to college or seek out another path I want every opportunity to be available. Not every child desires to go to college and it’s vital that we have robust career and technical education (CTE)&nbsp; available. Luckily, vocational training, learning a skilled trade, and union apprenticeships are all options on the table and lead to lucrative careers. From manufacturing semi-conductor chips to solar panels, we do it all in my district. <h4>Though Texas has made significant progress in delivering broadband across the state, there are still swaths of Texans, mostly in rural parts of the state, who lack access to reliable, high-speed internet. So many of our daily functions rely on the internet, from banking to shopping, paying bills and applying for jobs, schools, and scholarships — all Texans deserve to be on equal footing as it relates to broadband. Broadband is a necessary utility just like water and electricity in the modern age.&nbsp;</h4><h4> While I served in the Texas House, <a href="https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/History.aspx?LegSess=87R&amp;Bill=HB5" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">I co-authored a bill that was signed into law</a>, establishing a Broadband Development Office for Texas. Between a mix of state funds and federal investments from the Biden-Harris Administration, we’ve been able to make significant inroads with expanding high-speed broadband across the state. Every time you go to the grocery store, the gas pump, and the pharmacy -- you feel the effects. I will work day and night to fight for you and your loved ones to have your basic needs met, to ensure one person, one job is enough to live with dignity and retire with security. I will work to pass the policies I have championed my entire tenure in elected office -- policies to lower prices, not through subsidies but by lowering costs. Policies that will boost jobs, American manufacturing, clean energy, and high paying jobs that ensure the workforce of today is equipped for the jobs of tomorrow.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The road to American energy independence runs through Texas and will rely on using an “all of the above” approach to energy production. We have more wind power than any other state and are about to be the top in solar production as well. Unfortunately, the Trump Administration’s rollback of Biden-era tax incentives on wind and solar projects has already led to an increase in Texans’ utility bills. I am also concerned about the impact of Trump’s foreign policy on Texas’ energy economy as he strains our export power with tariffs and floods the market with Venezuelan oil reserves -- Texas continues to get hit the hardest. Being able to afford a home where you can raise a family is top priority for many Texans, but that dream is moving further out of reach every year. Interest rates and mortgages are high and Texas is leading in the number of foreclosures. Most renters are paying well over 30% of their monthly income. That’s not a budgeting issue, that’s the result of failed policies. When I served on the Agriculture Committee, I worked closely with our farmers and ranchers to understand their challenges. I worked with both Republicans and Democrats to develop a strong Farm Bill responsive to the needs of Texas producers. Criminal Justice Reform

<h4>I practiced criminal defense for almost twenty years but had to give it up when I got to Congress (members of Congress can not be paid attorney’s fees while serving). Even as I took on civil rights and personal injury cases, I never stopped practicing criminal defense work. I started as a public defender in rural East Texas and defended clients of every background with the same rigor because that’s what representation means. It was my experience as a criminal defense attorney that fueled my run for public office. At 28 years old, I ran for District Attorney in Bowie County Texas, and while I fell short, I became the Bowie County Democratic Party Chair. A decade later, I ran for State Representative to rewrite our outdated criminal laws that I saw hurting so many people, including teenagers caught in an adult system. On the federal level this continues to be a policy area of focus for me and my constituents. <h4>Immigrants have always contributed to the fullness of this nation and continue to drive our economy, innovation, and the vibrancy of our communities. America is a melting pot, a rich tapestry of all colors -- that is our strength. We have not reformed immigration to meet our needs nor modern realities. It is an outdated and inefficient system that doesn’t serve our national interests. Immigrants are part of Texas’ strength, contributing over $400 billion in economic activity, taxes, and Social Security. It shouldn’t cost $100,000 and take 30 years for someone who has played by the rules to earn their citizenship. Our values and civil rights don’t stop at the Rio Grande River. We need real solutions that meet this moment, not more division and fearmongering. I support comprehensive immigration reforms to create a pathway to legal status and citizenship that is secure, timely, and addresses the massive backlog of immigrants who arrived through legal means and have followed our laws but fell out of status waiting for USCIS to do their job. There are many others who are waiting for their visa or asylum case to be processed as they wait in limbo. My approach is simple: if parents are working, Washington should make it easier—not harder—for them to afford safe, high-quality care. In the US Senate, I will advance legislation to bring real relief:

America must reestablish our standing in the world and restore the strained relationships with our allies. We must prevent reliable longstanding U.S. allies shifting away from the U.S. and towards China or&nbsp; regional powers. Our allies around the world are wondering if they should still trust us while our adversaries wonder if they should still fear us. Not only do strong alliances between the U.S. and other countries benefit Texas as a large player in international exports, they reduce the likelihood of armed conflict that could put U.S. lives at risk. Unfortunately, with Trump throwing his weight around the world stage, unrestrained by the Senate, threatening to break apart NATO over Greenland, deposing foreign leaders, unilaterally applying tariffs, and more, this is not a hypothetical threat, but one we are watching develop right in front of our eyes. To address this threat, we must first check Trump, reasserting the Senate’s role in foreign affairs to stop the bleeding. This involves the passage of both War Powers Resolutions that would constrain his ability to gamble with the lives of our service members by throwing them into needless wars of conquest, and legislation clarifying that Trump doesn’t have the authority to impose at-will tariffs through IEEPA.

<h4>I’m proud to support our brave uniformed service members who keep our nation safe and free. For many families, the military has provided opportunities for education, job security, skills training, and strong benefits. Texas has one of the highest populations of active-duty military and we have more than a dozen active military bases generating over $150 billion in economic activity annually. I support ensuring our defense budget prioritizes our service members pay, healthcare, retirement, and other benefits they have more than earned. I want to see their families and dependents supported just the same because it truly is a shared sacrifice for our military families. In addition, I want to see that support continue for our veterans. We heard a lot about the price of eggs during the last election, yet everything still costs more today than yesterday. Texas is one of the top states for beef exports and top five for agriculture exports. Slapping on tariffs has hurt our farmers' bottom line. While Trump wants us to import even more beef from Argentina, I’m fighting to save cattle ranchers across Texas who are filing for bankruptcy. That starts with eliminating the tariffs and pushing beef from ranchers in places like Amarillo, not Argentina.

Foreign policy is a matter of national security and our standing on the world stage. Texas has the 8th largest economy in the world.&nbsp; We’re the number one state for exports and have felt the impact of tariffs harder than anyone else. The Port of Houston is a massive trade hub; among the top in the world, with over $220 Billion in economic activity. Texas is also the energy capital of the world. Trump handing over Venezuela’s oil reserves and bailing out Argentina’s beef industry hits Texas harder than any other state. ICE has become a rogue police force that’s unleashed terror across American cities. Untrained masked ICE “agents” are killing people in the middle of the street, in broad daylight, on camera, and getting away with it. <h4>Long before I was running for Senate, I was conducting oversight of ICE and demanding answers. I’ve been to Minneapolis, Chicago, and Los Angeles to participate in congressional field hearings. I also visited the Camp East Montana and Dilley Detention centers in Texas. Camp East Montana is one of the largest detention facilities in the country and Dilley is the location that had a spotlight shined on it when 5 year old Liam Ramos and his father Adrian Conejo Arias were taken from their home in Minneapolis. &nbsp; Myself and my colleague Joaquin Castro advocated for their release from Dilley and a judge agreed that their detention was unconstitutional, but the fight isn’t over. <h4>My entire career, I’ve fought the system and the system is fighting me back. I’m fighting those broken laws that try to silence our voices, take away our representation, and favor the few over the many. I serve on the Judiciary Committee, the Supreme Court Task Force, and am a licensed attorney of 20 years who practiced civil rights law. I’ve been deeply concerned about the state of our democracy and the direction our country is headed. I’ve said for a few years now that we’re in the midst of a modern day civil rights movement, it’s up to us to protect the rights our foremothers fought to secure and it’s on us to forge ahead with progress. Voting rights are under attack, because when our voices are silenced at the ballot box it's easier for Republicans to strip away the rest of our rights. Our system of checks and balances are failing as Congress has completely cowered to the President and the Supreme Court has handed this lawless President immunity. Not only do we need to expand the court, but we also need a code of ethics as this group of justices has revealed itself to be compromised. I am running to safeguard the civil rights and liberties of all, especially marginalized groups. I am running to defend our democracy by protecting access to the ballot box and championing protections for marriage equality and&nbsp; LGBTQ+&nbsp; community. As every right from free speech to due process is on the chopping block, those who simply talk tough won’t cut it. This moment demands leaders unafraid to take on those systems that are keeping us down. <h4>Texas is the energy capital of the world and a leader in clean energy. We have been blessed with vast natural resources but it’s up to us to preserve our environment. We’re facing a record drought and inclement weather events are becoming more frequent such as hurricanes, winter storms, flooding, and wildfires. While serving in the Texas Legislature, I was a founding member of the Texas House Energy &amp; Climate Caucus because we need policies at every level of government to meet our climate goals. In order to protect our natural resources which are foundational to both our energy and agriculture economies, we must take immediate action to address climate change. <h2>Jasmine was raised in a very civically-engaged household.</h2><h3>Her father, Joe, was a school teacher and preacher at their home church. Her mother, Gwen, served in the federal government for more than three decades. Together, her parents instilled a sense of faith, a responsibility to serve others, and taught her to never be bullied.</h3>Jasmine graduated from the University of Houston Law Center and kicked off her legal career as a public defender in rural East Texas. As a skilled community organizer, Jasmine won her first election in 2008 as the Bowie County Democratic Party Chair. Later, Jasmine moved to Dallas to expand her law practice as a criminal defense, civil rights, and personal injury attorney.Frustrated with a system of unjust laws and a state government that wasn’t responding to the everyday needs of Texans, Jasmine rolled up her sleeves, laced up her boots and ran for the Texas House of Representatives. Challenging an incumbent, Jasmine was outspent five to one, but never outworked. She went on to unseat the incumbent by 90 votes out of thousands -- proving that every single vote counts and matters.

As Republicans continue to cause problems and strip our reproductive rights, I’ve continuously worked on policy solutions to circumvent their attacks. Here are some bills I’m working on that I hope to see across the finish line in the US Senate:

Affordability &amp; A Strong Texas Economy For All&nbsp;

<h4>Every month, the bills get higher while our paychecks stay the same. Costs have&nbsp; gone up for housing, groceries, prescriptions, fuel, utilities, healthcare, and so much more due to Trump’s failed economic policies, including his unlawful tariffs. We’re witnessing the first generation of Americans who are worse off than their parents. Young people feel hopeless about their ability to buy a home, start a business, or raise a family because of high costs, low wages, and an economy that only works for billionaires. Opportunity is slipping away as barriers keep rising. Texans deserve an economy that works for all of us, not just the powerful few. I’m fighting to raise wages, lower costs, and cut taxes for the middle class and working families.&nbsp;</h4><h4> Texas has the 8th largest economy in the world: so why is it that we also have the highest number of uninsured people, rising rent and foreclosure rates, and our farmers and ranchers are experiencing record bankruptcies? Thirty years of Republican control and failed leadership have caused Texans to suffer. Our state is prosperous, in spite of the Republicans, yet the people are struggling. Reproductive Freedom &amp; Maternal Health

<h4>Self-determination, personal choice, and privacy are foundational constitutional rights. Women will never have full personal and economic freedom until we restore the right to abortion access. I have always opposed abortion bans and restrictions. When I served in the Texas House of Representatives, Texas passed the most extreme abortion ban in the nation. Just as cautioned, the ban led to trauma and even death for many Texas women. When the Dobbs case reached the Supreme Court, I joined state lawmakers from across the south <a href="https://stateinnovation.org/pr/nearly-900-state-legislators-express-support-for-abortion-rights-as-supreme-court-decides-future-of-roe-v-wade">to file an amicus brief urging the court not to overturn Roe v. Wade</a>. I also co-authored the bill in the Texas House to <a href="https://capitol.texas.gov/BillLookup/History.aspx?LegSess=87R&amp;Bill=HB133">expand postpartum Medicaid for new mothers</a>. My approach to reproductive freedom follows science, medicine, and common sense. These decisions ought to be made by the patients and their trusted physicians, actual experts. I want Texans to be able to access the care they deserve in their community – not be forced to flee the state if they can afford to or remain pregnant against their wishes if they cannot. It’s no coincidence that Texas has a maternal mortality and morbidity crisis, with Black women at the greatest risk of death during childbirth. As a civil rights attorney, I am appalled by the myriad ways our government continues to not provide equal access and opportunity to Americans with disabilities. Despite over 70 million Americans living with some kind of disability, far too often their suffering is sidelined by our society, ignored and unaddressed. Disability Rights, Access, and Opportunity 

Though Texas has made significant progress in delivering broadband across the state, there are still swaths of Texans, mostly in rural parts of the state, who lack access to reliable, high-speed internet. So many of our daily functions rely on the internet, from banking to shopping, paying bills and applying for jobs, schools, and scholarships— all Texans deserve to be on equal footing as it relates to broadband. Broadband is a necessary utility just like water and electricity in the modern age.&nbsp;

More than half of the new jobs in America are created by small businesses. They have become the backbone of this economy along with the workers who keep them running. Small businesses offer healthy competition which keeps prices low for consumers. They reinvest dollars right back into our community and can uplift entire regional economies.&nbsp;

My entire career, I’ve fought the system and the system is fighting me back. I’m fighting those broken laws that try to silence our voices, take away our representation, and favor the few over the many. I serve on the Judiciary Committee, the Supreme Court Task Force, and am a licensed attorney of 20 years who practiced civil rights law. I’ve been deeply concerned about the state of our democracy and the direction our country is headed. I’ve said for a few years now that we’re in the midst of a modern day civil rights movement, it’s up to us to protect the rights our foremothers fought to secure and it’s on us to forge ahead with progress.

Self-determination, personal choice, and privacy are foundational constitutional rights. Women will never have full personal and economic freedom until we restore the right to abortion access. I have always opposed abortion bans and restrictions. When I served in the Texas House of Representatives, Texas passed the most extreme abortion ban in the nation. Just as cautioned, the ban led to trauma and even death for many Texas women.

Reproductive Freedom & Maternal Health  

As a civil rights attorney who has worked on these issues first hand, I know there is no shortage of solutions. We deserve leaders with the courage to take action. Throughout my career I have fought to reform policing with an emphasis on accountability, trust, and training. At the same time, I have prioritized keeping our community safe from violent crime through data driven measures, not through fear.

I’m proud to support our brave uniformed service members who keep our nation safe and free. For many families, the military has provided opportunities for education, job security, skills training, and strong benefits. Texas has one of the highest populations of active-duty military and we have more than a dozen active military bases generating over $150 billion in economic activity annually.

Owning your own home is a cornerstone of the American Dream and a key to building wealth across generations. Being able to afford a home where you can raise a family is top priority for many Texans, but that dream is moving further out of reach every year. Interest rates and mortgages are high and Texas is leading in the number of foreclosures. Most renters are paying well over 30% of their monthly income. That’s not a budgeting issue, that’s the result of failed policies. A combination of housing and worker shortage plus the additional financial impacts of Trump’s tariffs and bad government policy have all increased the cost of homes for builders, buyers, and renters.

Housing & Home Ownership 

Texas is the energy capital of the world and a leader in clean energy. We have been blessed with vast natural resources but it’s up to us to preserve our environment. We’re facing a record drought and inclement weather events are becoming more frequent such as hurricanes, winter storms, flooding, and wildfires. While serving in the Texas Legislature, I was a founding member of the Texas House Energy &amp; Climate Caucus because we need policies at every level of government to meet our climate goals.

Healthcare is a key concern for Texans across backgrounds and generations. Healthcare should be a guarantee, not a luxury. No family should have to choose between paying the light bill and paying for lifesaving medicine. By every metric, the United States spends more on healthcare than any other nation. We pay 70% more because of Big Insurance companies with rising premiums and declining coverage,

Child care is often a second rent payment for young families. There are too many families that have to make the tough choice of going back to work just to pay for daycare, or putting a career, or dream, on pause to stay home. Child care is not only an affordability issue, it's a workforce issue, a women’s rights issue as an overwhelming majority of caretaking has fallen on women, and it’s an economic issue.

In the modern day, our students need preparation to compete in the global job market. The reality for too many families is that the cost of higher education is simply too high, there’s not enough assistance, and some will never climb out of student loan debt. That’s yet another policy failure. Texas has the best talent in the world, whether you choose to go to college or seek out another path I want every opportunity to be available.

My dad was a school teacher and he instilled in me the belief that unlocking opportunities starts with a solid public school education. From early childhood education through post-secondary, opportunities shouldn’t be decided by zip code or tax bracket. We have a duty to unlock the full potential of each and every child through safe schools that are nurturing learning communities with certified teachers, nurses, counselors, and the support staff that keeps a school running.&nbsp;

Immigrants have always contributed to the fullness of this nation and continue to drive our economy, innovation, and the vibrancy of our communities. America is a melting pot, a rich tapestry of all colors — that is our strength. We have not reformed immigration to meet our needs nor modern realities.

Immigration Reform &amp; Border Security

From rising grocery bills to school meal costs, families are feeling the pinch. When I served on the Agriculture Committee, I worked closely with our farmers and ranchers to understand their challenges. I worked with both Republicans and Democrats to develop a strong Farm Bill responsive to the needs of Texas producers. When the same folks that paid Elon Musk $8 million taxpayer dollars a day decided to cut SNAP benefits, I fought for single moms and their children.

Labor unions and their organizing efforts have secured many of the workplace protections, safety standards, fair pay, and benefits so many of us rely on today. I am honored to have enjoyed the support of various labor groups, including <a href="https://us5.campaign-archive.com/?u=6f0c65483e13e41388386da2c&amp;id=79700af741" style="color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary);">SEIU Texas that has endorsed our campaign for the US Senate</a>, because they know I will fight tooth-and-nail for worker’s rights. I am proud to have a lifetime 100% pro-labor voting record on both the state and the federal level.

Increasing the retirement age for Social Security is a non-starter. Instead, we must raise the cap on Social Security so that everyone is paying their fair share. Americans who have worked hard and paid into Social Security their whole lives are counting on this earned benefit. Social Security is more modest than most people realize, yet it is still the largest source of income for so many retirees. We must fully finance Social Security to ensure solvency for generations to come.

Long before I was running for Senate, I was conducting oversight of ICE and demanding answers. I’ve been to Minneapolis, Chicago, and Los Angeles to participate in congressional field hearings. I also visited the Camp East Montana and Dilley Detention centers in Texas. Camp East Montana is one of the largest detention facilities in the country and Dilley is the location that had a spotlight shined on it when 5 year old Liam Ramos and his father Adrian Conejo Arias were taken from their home in Minneapolis

America must go back to being the global leader it has historically been because the US &amp; World are better off when we engage in sound Foreign Policy. Foreign policy is a matter of national security and our standing on the world stage. Texas has the 8th largest economy in the world.&nbsp; We’re the number one state for exports and have felt the impact of tariffs harder than anyone else. The Port of Houston is a massive trade hub; among the top in the world, with over $220 Billion in economic activity.

Foreign Policy & Trade 

I practiced criminal defense for almost twenty years but had to give it up when I got to Congress (members of Congress can not be paid attorney’s fees while serving). Even as I took on civil rights and personal injury cases, I never stopped practicing criminal defense work. I started as a public defender in rural East Texas and defended clients of every background with the same rigor because that’s what representation means.

Criminal Justice Reform

Every month, the bills get higher while our paychecks stay the same. Costs have&nbsp; gone up for housing, groceries, prescriptions, fuel, utilities, healthcare, and so much more due to Trump’s failed economic policies, including his unlawful tariffs. We’re witnessing the first generation of Americans who are worse off than their parents.
